|| चाणक्य नीति शास्त्र ||
अर्थनाशं मनस्तापं गृहे दुश्र्चरितानि च |
वञ्चनं चापमानं च मतिमान्न प्रकाशयेत् ||
A wise man should not reveal his loss
of wealth, the vexation of his mind, the misconduct of his own wife,
base words spoken by others, and disgrace that has befallen him. 7.1
धनधान्यप्रयोगेषु विद्यासन्ग्रहणे तथा |
आहारे व्यवहारे च त्यक्तलज्जः सुखी भवेत् ||
He who gives up shyness in monetary dealings, in acquiring knowledge, in eating and in business, becomes happy. 7.2
सन्तोषामृततृप्तानां यत्सुखं शान्तिरेव च |
न च तद्धनलुब्धानामितश्र्चेतश्र्च धावताम् ||
The happiness and peace attained by
those satisfied by the nectar of spiritual tranquillity is not attained
by greedy persons restlessly moving here and there. 7.3
सन्तोषस्त्रिषु कर्तव्यः स्वदारे भोजने धने |
त्रिषु चैव न कर्तव्योsध्ययने जपदानयोः ||
One should feel satisfied with the
following three things; his own wife, food given by Providence and
wealth acquired by honest effort; but one should never feel satisfied
with the following three; study, chanting the holy names of the Lord
(japa) and charity. 7.4
विप्रयोर्विप्रवह्नयोश्र्च दम्पत्योः स्वामिभ्रुत्ययोः |
अन्तरेण न गन्तव्यं हलस्य वृषभस्य च ||
Do not pass between two brahmanas,
between a brahmana and his sacrificial fire, between a wife and her
husband, between a master and his servant, and between a plough and an
ox. 7.5
पादाभ्यां न स्पृशेदग्निं गुरुं ब्राह्मणमेव च |
नैव गां न कुमारीं च न वृद्धं न शिशुं तथा ||
Do not let your foot touch fire, the
spiritual master or a brahmana; it must never touch a cow, a virgin, an
old person or a child. 7.6
शकटं पञ्चहस्तेन दशहस्तेन वाजिनम् |
गजं हस्तसहस्रेण देशत्यागेन दुर्जनम् ||
Keep yourself one
thousand meters away from an elephant, a hundred from a horse, ten from a
horned beast, but keep away from the wicked people by leaving the
country. (Unit used here is length of a hand) 7.7
हस्ती अन्कुशमत्रेण वाजी हस्तेन ताड्यते |
शृङ्गी लगुडहस्तेन खड्गहस्तेन दुर्जनः ||
An elephant is controlled by a goad (ankusha), a horse by a slap of the hand, a horned animal with the show of a stick, and a rascal with a sword. 7.8
तुष्यन्ति भोजने विप्रा मयूरा घनगर्जिते |
साधवः परसंपत्तौ खालाः परविपत्तिषु ||
साधवः परसंपत्तौ खालाः परविपत्तिषु ||
Brahmanas find satisfaction in a good meal, peacocks in the peal of thunder, a sadhu (saintly person) in seeing the prosperity of others, and the wicked in the misery of others. 7.9
अनुलोमेन बलिनं प्रतिलोमेन दुर्जनम् |
आत्मतुल्यबलं शत्रुं विनयेन बलेन वा ||
आत्मतुल्यबलं शत्रुं विनयेन बलेन वा ||
Conciliate a strong man by submission, a wicked man by opposition, and the one whose power is equal to yours by politeness or force. 7.10
बाहुवीर्यं बलं राज्ञां ब्रह्मणो ब्रह्मविद्धली |
रूपयौवनमाधुर्यं स्त्रीणां बलमनुत्तमम् ||
रूपयौवनमाधुर्यं स्त्रीणां बलमनुत्तमम् ||
The power of a king lies in his mighty
arms; that of a brahmana in his spiritual knowledge; and that of a
woman in her beauty, youth and sweet words. 7.11
नात्यन्तं सरलैर्भाव्यं गत्वा पश्य वनस्थलीम् |
छिद्यन्ते सरलास्तत्र कुब्जास्तिष्ठन्ति पादपाः ||
छिद्यन्ते सरलास्तत्र कुब्जास्तिष्ठन्ति पादपाः ||
Do not be very upright in your
dealings for you would see by going to the forest that straight trees
are cut down while crooked ones are left standing. 7.12
यत्रोदकं तत्र वसन्ति हंसा
स्तथैव शुष्कं परिवर्जयन्ति |
न हंसतुल्येन नरेण भव्यं
पुनस्त्यजन्तः पुनराश्रयन्ते ||
स्तथैव शुष्कं परिवर्जयन्ति |
न हंसतुल्येन नरेण भव्यं
पुनस्त्यजन्तः पुनराश्रयन्ते ||
Swans live wherever there is water,
and leave the place where water dries up; let not a man act so -- he
should come and go as he pleases. 7.13
उपार्जितानां वित्तानां त्याग एव हि रक्षणम् |
तडागोदरसंस्थानां परीवाह एवाम्भसाम् ||
तडागोदरसंस्थानां परीवाह एवाम्भसाम् ||
Accumulated wealth is saved by spending just as incoming fresh water is saved by letting out stagnant water. 7.14
यस्यार्थास्तस्य मित्राणि यस्यार्थास्तस्य बान्धवाः |
यस्यार्थाः स पुमांल्लोके यस्यार्थाः स पण्डितः ||
यस्यार्थाः स पुमांल्लोके यस्यार्थाः स पण्डितः ||
He who has wealth has friends and relations; he alone survives and is respected as a wise man. 7.15
स्वर्गस्थितानामिह जीवलोके
चत्वारि चिन्हानि वसन्ति देहे |
दानप्रसंगो मधुरा च वाणी
देवार्चनं ब्राह्मणतर्पणं च ||
चत्वारि चिन्हानि वसन्ति देहे |
दानप्रसंगो मधुरा च वाणी
देवार्चनं ब्राह्मणतर्पणं च ||
The following four characteristics of
the denizens of heaven may be seen in the residents of this earth
planet; charity, sweet words, worship of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, and satisfying the needs of brahmanas. 7.16
अत्यन्तकोपः कटुका च वाणी
दरिद्रता च स्वजनेषु वैरम् |
नीचप्रसङ्गः कुलहीनसेवा
चिन्हानि देहे नरकस्थितानाम् ||
दरिद्रता च स्वजनेषु वैरम् |
नीचप्रसङ्गः कुलहीनसेवा
चिन्हानि देहे नरकस्थितानाम् ||
The following qualities of the
denizens of hell may characterize men on earth; extreme wrath, harsh
speech, enmity with one's relations, the company with the base, and
service to men of low extraction. 7.17
गम्यते यदि मृगेन्द्रमन्दिरं
लभ्यते करिकपालमौक्तिकम् |
जम्बुकालयगते च प्राप्यते
वत्सपुच्छखरचर्मखण्डनम् ||
लभ्यते करिकपालमौक्तिकम् |
जम्बुकालयगते च प्राप्यते
वत्सपुच्छखरचर्मखण्डनम् ||
By going to the den of a lion pearls
from the head of an elephant may be obtained; but by visiting the hole
of a jackal nothing but the tail of a calf or a bit of the hide of an
ass may be found. 7.18
शुनः पुच्छमिव व्यर्थं जीवितं विद्यया विना |
न गुह्यगोपने शक्तं न च दंश निवारणे ||
न गुह्यगोपने शक्तं न च दंश निवारणे ||
The life of an uneducated man is as
useless as the tail of a dog which neither covers its rear end, nor
protects it from the bites of insects. 7.19
वाचां शौचं न मनसः शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः |
सर्वभूतदयाशौचमेतच्छौचं परार्थिनाम् ||
सर्वभूतदयाशौचमेतच्छौचं परार्थिनाम् ||
Purity of speech, of the mind, of the
senses, and that of a compassionate heart are needed by one who desires
to rise to the divine platform. 7.20
पुष्पे गन्धं तिले तैलं काष्ठेsग्निं पयसि घृतम् |
इक्षौ गुडं तथा देहे पश्यात्मानं विवेकतः ||
इक्षौ गुडं तथा देहे पश्यात्मानं विवेकतः ||
As you seek fragrance in a flower, oil
in the sesame seed, fire in wood, ghee in milk, and jaggery (guda) in sugar cane; so seek the spirit that is in the body by means of
discrimination. 7.21
